Synthetic example

The decision.
In one brief.

A fictional monitoring outage at Northline Distribution. Every organization, condition, and time below is invented for this exercise.

SYNTHETIC EXAMPLE — NOT OPERATIONAL GUIDANCEBRIEF / 001

DECISION REQUESTED

Authorize one bounded activity.
Reassess before extending it.

Should Northline’s asset owner permit a single time-sensitive shipment while remote video is unavailable?

RECOMMENDED TREATMENT / MITIGATE

Restricted continuation, conditional on independent verification of the remaining controls and explicit asset-owner acceptance of residual risk.

Business objective
Complete one shipment while preserving the required level of protection.
Decision owner
Northline’s designated operations asset owner.
Advice / execution
Security advises; the local operations lead verifies the substitute process; the technical owner manages recovery.
Decision window
Before shipment authorization; no automatic extension to later activity.

Known facts in this example

  • Remote video is unavailable.
  • A shipment is scheduled.
  • Local access controls are reported operational.
  • No intrusion is established by the information supplied.

Assumptions to verify

  • The reported access-control status is accurate.
  • An independent verification process is available.
  • The substitute can be maintained for the entire activity.
  • The asset owner understands the consequence of delay.

Options and tradeoffs

OptionBenefitExposure / cost
Continue normallyPreserves planned throughput.Accepts an unverified loss of assurance; requires evidence that independent protection is sufficient.
Restrict the activityPreserves one bounded objective with substitute verification.Creates capacity and handoff demands; depends on a treatment that must be checked.
Pause the shipmentAvoids the activity’s exposure during the gap.Creates delay and downstream business effects; appropriate if a reliable substitute is unavailable.

Residual risk

Reduced remote visibility remains. The substitute may detect less or respond more slowly than normal arrangements. It is not equivalent to full restoration. The asset owner must accept that defined exposure before activity starts.

Review triggers

Reassess if verification fails, scope expands, the substitute becomes unsustainable, or contrary reporting arrives. Review again at completion of this shipment. Restore normal activity only after recovery evidence is confirmed.

Decision record

Record the owner’s decision, verified conditions, time, treatment owner, and next review. This example is a reasoning artifact, not an employer form or reusable authorization.
